Report from our correspondent on November 1, xiangya 2nd hospital of central south university published a new study results: hypercholesterolemia may cause cartilage damage, so as to increase the risk of arthritis. The group using animal model, new research suggests that high cholesterol can trigger mitochondrial excessive oxidative stress, cartilage cells and promote its apoptosis, cause the subchondral bone of the bone loss, in the end, or for the development of osteoarthritis.

Research by using two different kinds of animal models to simulate the human hypercholesterolemia. The first model is the apolipoprotein E gene knockout hypercholesterolemia (ApoE - / -) mice model, the other is a feeding with high cholesterol diet, diet induced hypercholesterolemia rats model. These two models are divided into high cholesterol diet group and normal diet group, in order to simulate knee joint, two models for knee arthritis simulation surgery. Whether mice or rats, compared with normal diet group, the high cholesterol diet group showed more severe osteoarthritis. The treatment of lower cholesterol levels and mitochondrial targeting antioxidant treatment, significantly reducing the incidence of osteoarthritis. Therefore, the research concludes that hypercholesterolemia by acting on the cell mitochondria oxidative stress mechanism and cause osteoarthritis.

"This study inject new vitality to the research of osteoarthritis, for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis provides a new direction." FASEB journal editor Thoru Pederson said: "before this, our focus on hypercholesterolemia on the cardiovascular and artery disease, but now we have a new discovery." New exhibition (MAO)
