Calcium supplements should look before you leap
Liao Lian Ming
Source: health
A large number of clinical studies confirmed that eating calcium-rich foods or taking calcium supplements can prevent the osteopenia and osteoporosis, especially in post-menopausal women. Calcium supplements are widely used against estrogen and age-related decline in bone density, especially suitable for those who lack of food rich in calcium.
Suggestion is that adults need to consume 1000 ~ 1200 mg of calcium per day. Healthy diet, diet rich in dairy products and calcium fortified foods, containing calcium should be able to meet this quantity. Three recent study data show that high calcium intake may increase the risk of myocardial infarction. So for sticking to a healthy diet of people, if they do not lack of vitamin D, so no need to by calcium supplements to prevent osteoporosis.
First large-scale prospective study was in June 2012, researchers at the German cancer research center, published in the journal heart, the results make high calcium intake with myocardial infarction (ami) between the potential risk to get the attention of the media. This study was to assess dietary calcium intake and taking calcium supplements with risk of heart attack, stroke, and the relationship between the overall mortality of cardiovascular disease. Study participants included 23980 objects, collect their food intake in detail and the use of calcium supplements the information. Happened in the 11 years of observation, 354 cases of myocardial infarction, 260 cases of stroke and 267 cases of cardiovascular death. Analysis results show that compared with not taking calcium supplements are often take calcium supplements to 86% increased risk of myocardial infarction.
A second study, published in February in the British medical journal online edition, done by researchers at the university of uppsala in Sweden. The research object of study for 61000 female patients, they were born in 1914 ~ 1948, an average follow-up time of 19 years. Researchers on the amount of dietary intake of calcium in the questionnaire, supplements dose calcium and total calcium intake assessment found that calcium with daily intake of 600 ~ 900 mg, compared to daily intake of 1400 mg, overall mortality rates increased by 40%, and cardiovascular disease mortality rate increased by 50%.
Therefore, experts suggest that calcium supplements can give those after diet intake of calcium is still insufficient, or because of disease treatment and demanders. For healthy people, would be wise to get vitamins and minerals from the food. Eating calcium-rich foods (including low-fat dairy products, beans, green leafy vegetables) performed better than taking calcium supplements.
